Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten that can cause severe digestive problems. It affects 1 in 70 Australians who are mostly diagnosed in adulthood.

What is Coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease, sometimes known as celiac disease in American English, is a chronic autoimmune condition that mostly affects the small intestine and causes intolerance to the protein gluten, which is found in grains including wheat, rye, and barley. Gastronomic issues such persistent diarrhea, abdominal distention, malabsorption, loss of appetite, and in children, failure to grow normally, are among the classic signs. 1

Gliadins and glutenins (gluten proteins) found in wheat, as well as related proteins present in plants of the tribe Triticeae (which includes other common grains like barley and rye)and the tribe Aveneae, are what cause coeliac disease.  Coeliac disease symptoms can also be brought on by wheat hybrids (such as triticale) and subspecies (such as spelt, durum, and Kamut). At present, the only effective treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet. 1
